What we do

The Mint House: Home of Sussex Folklore is not your typical heritage destination. We're here to challenge convention and do heritage differently.

Nestled in the heart of Sussex, The Mint House is a 16th-century Grade II* listed building with deep historical roots and a future full of possibility. Currently undergoing restoration, this remarkable space is being reimagined as a thriving cultural hub—where history, folklore, creativity, and community come together.

Our mission is to secure the future of The Mint House and share it with the community in meaningful, inclusive, and environmentally conscious ways. We’re committed to telling the stories of Sussex—especially those often left out of traditional narratives—and inviting everyone to take part in shaping the next chapter.

A Place for Everyone

We believe heritage belongs to everyone. The Mint House is being restored as a safe, welcoming, and vibrant space for all. Whoever you are and wherever you're from, if you’re here, you’re part of our story.

Archaeology, Storytelling, and Preservation

With a site as rich as The Mint House, we’re approaching its restoration with care and curiosity. Any archaeological discoveries will be carefully documented and preserved as part of our commitment to protecting the heritage assets that lie within and around our walls.

Our Vision

We see The Mint House as a creative meeting ground where the past and present fuse. Through education, events, workshops, and cultural programming, we’re connecting people to both the physical fabric of the building and the intangible cultural heritage of Sussex—its folklore, traditions, and diverse voices.

A Living Home for Folklore

We’re proud to be the home of Sussex Folklore—a living archive of story, ritual, memory, and belief. The Mint House exists to celebrate the magic in the everyday, and the extraordinary stories of ordinary people across generations.

A Folklore Community

We're also building a growing online community—starting with our lively Instagram presence—to reach beyond our walls. Through digital content and interactive storytelling, we invite you to engage with Sussex folklore, discover hidden histories, and join a conversation about heritage that’s open, evolving, and truly inclusive.

Doing Heritage Sustainably

As we restore and revive The Mint House, we are committed to environmentally responsible practices that honour both the planet and the past. Sustainability is central to how we work—from restoration and maintenance, to our events and day-to-day operations.
